There and Back Again Printable Map of the Hobbit
The Hobbit or There and Back Again
J.R.R. Tolkien'due south own description for the original edition: "If yous intendance for journeys there and back, out of the comfortable Western globe, over the edge of the Wild, and home again, and can accept an interest in a apprehensive hero (blessed with a little wisdom and a fiddling courage and considerable good luck), here is a record of such a journeying and such a traveler. The menstruation is the aboriginal time between the age of Faerie and the dominion of men, when the famous woods of Mirkwood was still standing, and the mountains were full of danger. In following the path of this humble adventurer, you will learn by the style (equally he did) -- if you practise not already know all about these things -- much about trolls, goblins, dwarves, and elves, and go some glimpses into the history and politics of a neglected only important period. For Mr. Bilbo Baggins visited diverse notable persons; conversed with the dragon, Smaug the Magnificent; and was present, rather unwillingly, at the Boxing of the 5 Armies. This is all the more remarkable, since he was a hobbit. Hobbits take hitherto been passed over in history and legend, perhaps because they as a dominion preferred condolement to excitement. Merely this account, based on his personal memoirs, of the one exciting year in the otherwise quiet life of Mr. Baggins volition give y'all a fair idea of the estimable people now (it is said) condign rather rare. They do not like noise." -
First Edition Identification and Notes
-George Allen & Unwin Ltd. of London published the first edition ofThe Hobbit on 21 September 1937 with a print run of 1,500 copies, illustrated in black and white by Tolkien, who also designed the dust jacket. The first printing sold out past December. In early 1938 Houghton Mifflin of Boston and New York reset type for an American edition, and included four of the illustrations in colour plates. Allen & Unwin decided to incorporate the colour illustrations into their 2d printing, released at the end of 1937. World War Two and paper rationing disrupted the press, only subsequent edition were published in 1951, 1966, 1978 and 1995, and the novel has been reprinted ofttimes past many publishers, and translated into over forty languages.
